I’ve had the pleasure to visit classrooms over the past 18 months via Zoom to discuss my book, or sometimes individual chapters in the book that tie into classroom projects being done by dramaturgy students.
I’ve done these in both one and two visit formats – and I’ve come to prefer the latter, since the hands-on collaborations in the field itself are more practical and personal than many classroom exercises. This has often been a surprise to students and we often run out of time discussing how we, as dramaturgs, can be of use to a company. Discovering how to be a productive part of a collaboration with all the information we bring with us is such an important skill. What is that information and how to bring it into the room is central to our work.
If you are teaching dramaturgy – and there are widely different levels of knowledge from intro classes to more advanced production work, this should be worked out in advance.
